Commiphora

Commiphora myrrha is a tree, which is also called myrrh. It belongs to Burseraceae family. Commiphora tree bleeds an aromatic and useful resign, which has been used in medicine, cosmetics and as a flavoring substance in perfumes, beverages, foods. Commiphora myrrha is native to eastern Ethiopia, Somalia, Yemen, Eritrea. The Christian Bible contains the facts that myrrh was one of the gifts, which was presented to baby Jesus by wise men. It was also used in different religious rituals. It is said, myrrh was used in ancient Egypt in embalming. The word “myrrh” derives from Arabic “mur” and means “bitter”.

In medicine commiphora is used to treat:

  • cough;
  • asthma;
  • cancer;
  • indigestions;
  • gum problems;
  • arthritis;
  • sprains;
  • spasms;
  • leprosy;
  • bruises;
  • wounds;
  • bedsores;
  • syphilis;
  • hemorrhoid.

Myrrh also acts like stimulant and tonic, regulates the appetite and can be used both internally and topically.

In general, commiphora myrrha is safe, but you shouldn't over use it, 2-4 grams per day is a safe dosage. Breast-feeding and pregnant women are not recommended to take it even in small doses.
